The South Has Been Destroyed (Yet Again)

A Poem by J. H. Johns

The South has been destroyed,
(yet again),
not by a war-
that’s over;
not by floods-
thank-you T.V.A.;
not even by droughts;

it has been destroyed
by air-conditioning;

it killed the charm,
it killed the ambiance-

it brought “feriners” in;
Yankees from the north;
workaholics from the Midwest;
and, then,
there’s those “West Coast Types;”

air-conditioning did it all;
the South is no longer unique-
though, it likes to think so-
it has become a regional
suburban strip mall;

empty of substance,
devoid of real meaning;

the South has been destroyed-

yet again…

J. H. Johns “grew up and came of age” while living in East Tennessee and Middle Georgia.  Specifically, the two places “responsible” for the writer that he has become are Knoxville,Tennessee and Milledgeville, Georgia.
